Don’t Let This Ruin your MRc7 Certified Wood point!

For all the fuss about the Certified Wood credit from the forestry industry, it really hasn’t played a huge role in LEED projects. Only about a third of projects earn the point for FSC wood. Heck, you get up to 3 points for local materials, which according to my calculator, is 3 times better.  In my humble experience, we’ve typically earned it when there is one large wood line item, such as wood doors. Make sure the doors are FSC, and boom, easy point.

Easy…unless you screw it up. There are two components you need for a successful submission. 1) Vendor invoices for EVERY piece of wood on the project, not just the FSC wood, and 2)Chain of Custody number shown on EVERY FSC vendor invoice. If you don’t have those two components, regardless of your product cut sheet, you’re not earning the point.

So whether your getting your lumber from Home Depot or from a lumber company, make sure you save all your receipts AND show the Chain of Custody number throughout the process – on every vendor invoice for the FSC wood you are claiming.
